Get Started Writing C# in VS Code

Note about using .NET Core 3.1.40x SDKs

The .NET 3.1.40x SDKs require version 16.7 of MSBuild.

For MacOS and Linux users who have Mono installed, this means you will need to set omnisharp.useGlobalMono to never until a version of Mono ships with MSBuild 16.7.

Note about using .NET 5 SDKs

The .NET 5 SDK requires version 16.8 of MSBuild.

For Windows users who have Visual Studio installed, this means you will need to be on the latest Visual Studio 16.8 Preview.For MacOS and Linux users who have Mono installed, this means you will need to set omnisharp.useGlobalMono to never until a version of Mono ships with MSBuild 16.8.

Semantic Highlighting

The C# semantic highlighting support is in preview. To enable, set editor.semanticHighlighting.enabled and csharp.semanticHighlighting.enabled to true in your settings. Semantic highlighting is only provided for code files that are part of the active project.

Visual Studio Code For Beginners

To really see the difference, try the new Visual Studio 2019 Light and Dark themes with semantic colors that closely match Visual Studio 2019.

Supported Operating Systems for Debugging

  • Currently, the C# debugger officially supports the following operating systems:

    • X64 operating systems:
      • Windows 7 SP1 and newer
      • macOS 10.12 (Sierra) and newer
      • Linux: see .NET Core documentation for the list of supported distributions. Note that other Linux distributions will likely work as well as long as they include glibc and OpenSSL.
    • ARM operating systems:
      • Linux is supported as a remote debugging target

Found a Bug?

To file a new issue to include all the related config information directly from vscode by entering the command pallette with Ctrl+Shift+P(Cmd+Shift+P on macOS) and running CSharp: Report an issue command. This will open a browser window with all the necessary information related to the installed extensions, dotnet version, mono version, etc. Enter all the remaining information and hit submit. More information can be found on the wiki.

Development

First install:

  • Node.js (8.11.1 or later)
  • Npm (5.6.0 or later)

To run and develop do the following:

  • Run npm i
  • Run npm run compile
  • Open in Visual Studio Code (code .)
  • Optional: run npm run watch, make code changes
  • Press F5 to debug

To test do the following: npm run test or F5 in VS Code with the 'Launch Tests' debug configuration.

What is Live Share?

Live Share enables you to quickly collaborate with a friend, classmate, or professor on the same code without the need to sync code or to configure the same development tools, settings, or environment.

When it comes to Live Share, seeing is believing. Check out this video to see Live Share in action:

When you share a collaborative session, the person you're working with sees the context of the workspace in their editor. This means your classmate can read the code you shared without having to clone a repo or install any dependencies your code relies on. They can help you with your code in the Visual Studio Code environment that's familiar to them.

Each of you can open files, navigate, edit code, or highlight - and changes are instantly reflected. As you edit you can see your classmate's cursor, jump to the same location, and follow their actions.

You can also debug together using VS Code's debugging features, like hovers, locals and watches, the stack trace or the debug console. You are both able to set breakpoints and advance the debug cursor to step through the session.

Get started with Live Share

To get started with using Live Share in VS Code, you'll need to download the Live Share Extension Pack from the Extension Marketplace.

This extension pack includes everything you need to start collaboratively editing and debugging in real time, including integrated audio and text chat. This provides you and your team/class with a one-click installation, in order to begin pair programming, performing remote code reviews, driving interactive lectures, and more, without needing to leave Visual Studio Code.

Once you log into your GitHub account, you'll see the Live Share icon in the Activity Bar.

Starting a Live Share session

If you select Start Collaboration session from the Session Details menu, an invitation link to your session will automatically be copied to your clipboard. You can share this link with anyone you'd like to collaborate with, as long as they also have VS Code and the Live Share Extension Pack downloaded.

When your classmate joins the session, you'll get a notification, and see their name come up under Participants.

You should be able to see and interact with your classmate's code on your screen!
